Joe Glenton is a soldier refusing to fight in Afghanistan and lead the recent demonstration against the ongoing war in Afghanistan. He faces desertion charges and has been arrested and charged with five further offences for speaking against the war. The new charges carry a maximum of ten years imprisonment. In addition, he faces three to four years if the desertion charge is upheld.
Some 232 British soldiers have now been killed in Afghanistan, 95 this year alone. Public support for the war is at an all-time low as the government become more and more isolated over the issue.
There will be demonstrations against the arrest of Joe Glenton at 5pm today in London and in Colchester:
LONDON: 5PM – Outside Ministry of Defence, Whitehall (just south of Trafalgar Square).
COLCHESTER, ESSEX: 5PM – Military Corrective Training Centre, Berechurch Hall Camp, Colchester, Essex CO2 9NU.
